Death Café
In my office stands an empty wine bottle, used as a vase. Its label reads “Elephant in the room.” It’s there not for decoration, but as an invitation — a quiet prompt to acknowledge what we often avoid.
Few subjects feel more like an elephant than death, and its close companions: grief, loss, and uncertainty.
Death Café North Canterbury offers a gentle, open space for conversations about death and dying. These may arise from personal experience — a terminal diagnosis, the loss of someone dear — or from curiosity about beliefs, rituals, or the practical realities of dying. There is no requirement to share, and no expectation of resolution.
We meet monthly at Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Amberley libraries, always at 2pm on a Sunday. Click here for dates for each location.
As part of the international Death Café movement, Death Café North Canterbury is professionally hosted and facilitated. There is no agenda, no expert speaker, and no product. The conversation belongs to those who attend. The guiding intention is simple: to increase awareness of death, with a view to helping people make the most of their finite lives.
Globally, more than 22,670 Death Cafés have been held in 94 countries, including many throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
And while the subject matter can be profound, the atmosphere is human and warm. There is cake. There is often laughter. And sometimes, an empty wine bottle reminds us that even the heaviest topics can be approached with curiosity, honesty, and care.
